The SP4449 Daylight Locomotive is currently undergoing the FRA mandated 15 year boiler inspection and rebuild. We have a very limited number of small components removed during the tear down for sale. Own your very own piece of this world famous locomotive and help support the effort.

one\'flexible\' stay bolt removed from the SP-4449 boiler

Steel, approximately 8\" long by 1\" diameter with a 1-1/2\" diameter head, over 2 pounds of steel.

We are replacing a section of the transition from the firebox to the combustion chamber. After removing the first section, we just discovered that a larger area of the throat sheet requires repair and that resulted in the availability of more stay bolts. As with our other stay bolts, removal required cutting them with a torch. However, because of their location, these are more than twice the length of the others we have offered and most have traces of thread remaining.

In the photo taken inside the firebox, you can see some of the hundreds of stay bolts that provide structure integrity between the inner and outer walls of the boiler as it surrounds the firebox. Without all this steel, the boiler would blow apart under the 300 pounds of pressure during operation. These stay bolts were removed from the lower portion of the section you see.

Part is distinctly worn by years of use. Because these were lower in the boiler, they were heavily scaled with mineral deposits and are very unique from any others we have offered. After cleaning, some scale and pitting remain and createa beautiful finished surface.

We are honored to be the appointed caretakers of 3 steam locomotives owned by the city of Portland, Oregon. The trio includes the world famous SP 4449 Daylight locomotive, originally restored to pull the American Freedom Train in 1975-76. The magnificent SP&S 700 is also an operational 4-8-4 which came back to life in 1990. They are joined by their little sister, the OR&N197, a Pacific 4-6-2 which will steam up again in about 2 years.

All three are located at the new Oregon Rail Heritage Center, a working enginehouse, allowing public access to the locomotives. We receive no support from the city, but rely solely upon volunteers and donations. Your support is deeply appreciated.
