Two (2) exceptional early antique English Davenport plates (for cabinet display or use) featuring hand painted landscape scenes. Gorgeous form with openwork border. Davenport (1785-1887) porcelain is of very fine quality, similar to antique Minton, Spode, Coalport and the like.
SIZE: Approximately 9\" in diameter.
MARKS: Faint \"Davenport Longport\" on underside of plates. My research indicates that this is a rarely seen printed mark used on EARLY porcelains, PRIOR to 1820. I believe that would be while the founder of Davenport, John Davenport, was still in charge of the pottery. If exact dating matters to you, please do your own research. There is also a \"1452\" mark in red, likely a pattern number.
CONDITION: Antique plates. Just a few minor scratches on the pink border and a few minor blemishes on the feet, Gilt wear is extremely minimal (almost none). Super enlarged photos are included below. Please scan down to view them. All is all, they are in outstanding condition for antique plates, a tribute to their fine quality and the fact that they have clearly been well loved and care for over the years.
From The Potteries.org: \"John Davenport, born in 1765, is said to have begun potting in 1785, first as a workman, and later as a partner with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke. He acquired his own pottery at Longport for the manufacture of earthenware in 1794. In 1830 he retired, and his two sons Henry and William carried on the firm until 1835, when Henry died. This style of the firm then became William Davenport and Company. William died in 1869, and his two sons took over the direction of the business, which remained in the family until 1887\".
