Pair Of 1870s-1880s American Presidential / Political Campaign / Parade Torches For Sale

Pair Of 1870s-1880s American Presidential / Political Campaign / Parade Torches

Rare and original, Matched Pair of ca1870’s or 1880’s American Political Campaign / Parade Torchs used by political organizations during Torchlight Parades which were a common form of demonstration during Political Campaigns of the 19th century.

These wonderful, original Campaign Parade Torches each measure approx. 27" long overall and feature matching, 23” long turned wooden handles with a nickel plated tin torches affixed to the top. The Torches are formed in the shape of a canister and projecting from the top of the canister is the original tin burner - one of the two Torches retains what appears to be an original, period wick made of cotton batting.

The Torches are mounted on a wire gimbal allowing them to remain upright while being carried by a marcher. The wire gimbal is inserted directly into a hole at the top of the wooden handle. We are told that this form of Parade Torch was typical of those used in the 1870’s and 1880’s and both the construction and materials are consistent with this date of manufacture.

This rare and quite wonderful, matching pair of later 19th century Campaign Parade Torches are both in very good condition. The nickel plated canister form torch heads are intact, sound and without significant wear or damage of any kind - no breaks, dents, serious rust, holes or repairs. There is some surface tarnish to both Torches and while one of the Torches retains most all of its original nickel plating, the other has some loss with some light surface oxidation as can be seen in the scans below. The turned, wooden handles are intact and sound with no breaks or repairs and retain their original surface finish. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the form and condition of this wonderful Pair of American Parade Torches.

A very rare and quite wonderful, Matched Pair of ca1870’s or 1880’s American Political Campaign / Parade Torches and a fantastic addition to any Political Americana Collection!!!
