Three Antique Engraved Portraits
*****

This item consists of three very detailed steel engraved portraits of Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard made during the Civil War and shortly after. Each of these measures approximately nine inches high by five-to-six inches wide, and all of the images are very finely engraved and in excellent condition.

The first of these was engraved during the Civil War by George E. (Edward) Perine (1837-1885), a prominent New York engraver. The second engraving, made by A. B. Walter of Philadelphia, has the engraved likeness of Beauregard’s signature below the portrait. And the third engraving, made by John A. O’Neill of New York, has Beauregard’s engraved signature, with “general commanding” added beneath.

[Note: During the Civil War, Beauregard rarely used his first name, signing most documents with the signature engraved below these portraits: G. T. Beauregard.”]

Louisiana-born Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-1893) was a West Point graduate who served with distinction in the War with Mexico. During the Civil War he became the first prominent Confederate general. After serving for a very short time in 1861 as superintendent of the United States Military Academy, he became the Confederacy’s first brigadier general and was in command of the defenses of Charleston, South Carolina when Fort Sumter was fired upon, beginning the Civil War. He went on to victory in the first Battle of Bull Run, and commanded armies in the Battle of Shiloh and at the Siege of Corinth. Perhaps his most important achievement was his success in 1864 in defending Petersburg, Virginia against vastly superior Union forces (thus saving also Richmond, the Confederate capital).

This is a great piece of Civil War history, three engraved portraits of one of the South’s most skilled commanders.

SIZE: Each of these engravings measures about nine inches high, with a width between five and six inches

CONDITION: These historic engravings are all in excellent condition, with a great appearance, and they will display quite nicely. The only imperfection at all is a most insignificant one, a wisp of very, very light browning to the right of the Perine engraving. It is virtually unnoticeable, and does not detract at all from this the great display potential of this image, which in all other respects is quite pristine, as are the other two.

These engravings are all ORIGINAL, guaranteed to be authentic, and not later reprints or any other type of reproductions!
