This listing is for a single page from Harper\'s Weekly magazine dated December 26,1874. It is page 1073 and 1074.
About the magazines of this time:History depicted in engravings from Illustrated Antique Weeklies- From the mid1800\'s to the turn of the century, even before many could read, the extremelypopular illustrated newspapers such asHarper\'s Weekly,FrankLeslie\'s Illustrated, L\'Illustration Journal Universel, andIllustrated London Newspictured the news and events of thetimes. Special artist-correspondents were present at the event to accuratelysketch the scene as it was making history. These sketches were rushed to publishers whereby skilled artisans engraved them on wood blocks.Within a week after the event the printed illustrated newspapers were in thepublic\'s hands. Today their value to collectors is twofold: as historicallyaccurate records, and as exquisitely engraved works of art. Frame this item tocreate an unusual and interesting art piece for your home.
Page 1073 has three great pictures. The late Honorable Ezra Cornell, King Kalakaua.(Its interesting that this sheet discusses the US desire to get Pearl Harbor even in 1874, although they did not officially make a US possession until around 1887.). The third picture is entitled, \"The Last Transit of Venus-Coast of Kerguelen Island.\" This sheet could be framed as is or cut into three different pieces for framing.
Or if you are an advertisement person, the back has a few interesting things. How about a full set of bedroom furniture for $53.00, postage paid? Or how about some of Gouraud\'s Oriental Cream, to make your complexion as white as falling snow, and the hair above your lip will lift right off?
Paper is in great shape for its age. No major tears. One bottom corner is torn a small bit. One edge is jagged from being torn from a book. A little browning of the edges. Picture ink is dark and clear. No fading, tears, holes or worn spots. At the top, there are some water stains, but its not big. This is a great old sheet of paper!
