This is a fabulous White Plaited Woven Cane Belt or (Kava) from the Melpa Tribal People of the Wahgi Valley, Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea. The kava or belt is the symbol of adult manhood, showing that a young man belongs to the warrior age class, which is the final stage of initiation. Once the cane is plaited and woven it is incised in a specific designs relating to the clan, which helps identify the clan of the belt wearer and enveloped them with the flow of ancestral power. This incised cane belt was worn by initiated men of rank, wrapped around the waist, the belt was typically secured with twine. A complex pattern is incised on the outside length of the belt, and the incising has been highlighted with white paint made from burned shells.
