Dani People, of characteristic form. The core formed from the inner bark of a tree, and tightly knotted over in continuous figure-eight technique with orchid vine, which also contributes the yellow and brown tones of the upper section. Connecting at the shoulders by means of cords. With good patina overall. Late 19th century. Overall height 49cm. This was purchased from the estate of a missionary who was assigned to Irian Jaya in the 1960s. I have included a photo of a page from an album of the mission(not included in the lot) The piece shows wear from handling and use.
It is made of natural fibers woven in a figure 8 pattern. Great display piece of New Guinea art.
