Partial 1882 Letter CIVIL WAR Episcopal Chaplain/ Rear Admiral JAMES J. KANE:
$5.00

Offered here is an uncommon Civil War autograph found on a partial 2pp. ALS, 3 3/8\" x 6 3/4\", dated Norfolk Naval Station, Va. Nov. 28, [18]82, sent to ___ A. Barker, signed Jas. J. Kane. JAMES J. KANE (1837-1921) was born in Ottawa, Canada. Kane was educated in Europe and in 1857 joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, before settling in the United States. Throughout the Civil War, Kane was a commissioned officer and chaplain. After the War, he was ordained to the ministry in 1867, and in 1868 Admiral D. G. Farragut commissioned Kane as a Chaplain in the U.S.N., where, by the time he retired from the service in 1898, Kane had achieved the rank of Rear Admiral. Folds, previous mounting traces/ discoloration on front portion of letter, which, sadly, was trimmed to its present size (basically, some prior owner wished only to display his signature), ink has faded some (but still readable), with faded red ink notation in another hand (biographical notes).
