A mid 19th Century Persian manuscript on paper with twenty-one lies of black nastaliq script within four columns between illuminated floral margins, some folios with floral panels dividing the text, green paper covered binding with colored panels. Known by his pen name of Nizami, the poet Nizami, was actually born as Abu Muhammad Ilyas ibn Yusuf ibn Zaki Mu’ayyad, around 1141 in Ganja, The capital of Arran in Transcaucasian Azerbaijian, where he remained until his death in about 1209. Having lost both parents, early in life, Nizami was raised by an uncle and was married three times. His poetry laments the deaths of each of his wives as well as offering advice to his son Muhammad. Nizami is best known for his five, long narrative poems and was a master of both a lyrical and sensuous style. There is little doubt about Nizami’s prodigious learning. His works demonstrate that he was fully acquainted with Arabic and Persian literature and with local traditions, but was also familiar with such diverse fields as mathematics, geometry, astronomy, astrology alchemy, medicine, Islamic theology and law, ethics, philosophy and historyThe Khamseh is truly a splendid example of the art of the Persian book and the heights it achieved under royal patronage. Nizami was a true Renaissance man, and even a social reformer. Especially in the treatment of women, he broke with the custom of the time. His women were strong, subtle and virtuous, but often with sharp, educated intellects. His passion for true justice was just as fierce. Nizami believed that Kings must rule wisely; they must create governments under which people can flourish spiritually as well as materially.
