Up for your consideration is this 2 volume set of \"The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant\". Published by Charles L. Webster and Co. 1st editions. Volume 1 1885, volume 2 1886. Both bound in Green cloth boards with gilt spines. Front and rear boards of each volume have gilt-stamped reproduction of Congressional Medal issued December 17, 1863 celebrating the Mississippi campaign.
With 49 maps and illustrations, including two steel-engraved frontis-portraits and two etched views, all with tissue-guards. Also with fold out manuscript facsimile and the dedication from Grant in holograph facsimile.
Grant was reluctant to write his Memoirs, but he was persuaded to do so by Mark Twain in order to provide for his family. Grant raced to finish the volumes before he died of cancer, and barely did finish before he died. The book was sold by subscription, and was one of the great publishing successes of the 19th Century.
Illustrated with several B&W maps (some fold-out), two tissue-protected frontispiece engravings of Grant, an etching of Grant\'s birthplace, an etching of the house at Appomattox, reproductions of documents (some fold-out), and a facsimile of handwriting of Gen. Grant laid in..Books are in Good+ to VG condition given their age. Has lightly bumped corners, shelf rubbed edges, and fraying/chipping to the spine ends and corners. Inner hinge starting to crack in volume 1, but nothing severe. Mild age soiling to the page edges. Cloth of volume 1 is torn about 3\" down the rear upper hinge section (as shown in photos). But overall, a good condition set. All pages, maps, and foldouts are accounted for. Both are bound complete and tight, with no internal markings or stamps noticed throughout.
