Martha Washington

Artist : Jalabert ; Engraved by William Wellstood

Overall Size : 9.75 by 6.50 inches.

This is a vintage engraved portrait of the Martha Washington, mother of our first President George Washington. This was published in an 1863 American literary and art publication.

Martha Dandridge Custis Washington (June 13 [O.S. June 2] 1731– May 22, 1802) was the wife of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Although the title was not coined until after her death, Martha Washington is considered to be the first First Lady of the United States. During her lifetime she was often referred to as \"Lady Washington\".[1]Widowed at 25, Custis had had four children with her late husband; two survived to young adulthood. She brought great wealth to her second marriage with Washington, which enabled him to buy much land and many slaves to add to his personal estate. She also brought nearly 100 \"dower slaves\" for her use during her lifetime; they and their descendants reverted to her late husband\'s estate at her death and were inherited by their heirs. She and Washington did not have children but they reared two children of her late husband, including son John (Jackie) Custis, who died during the Revolutionary War, as well as helping both of their extended families.

The portrait is printed on a high quality paper, blank on the reverse side. These vintage prints are renowned for their detail as well as their historical accuracy. This is not a modern reproduction or reprint. It is a vintage engraving, 150 years old and guaranteed to be as described.

Steel Engraving: A print produced by carving the lines of an image into a metal plate (copper or steel) with a tool called a burin. The lines produced by the carving are inked, and a dampened sheet of paper is pressed on to the plate. The ink is transferred to the paper producing the image. This type of printing was introduced in the 15th century and is a form of intaglio printing. A wood engraving is made in a similar fashion using wooden plates of oak or beech.
