Have you collected Lionel or American Flyer or Ives trains for many years? Are you getting bored because you already have many pieces and the rare ones are too expensive? Or, are you interested in collecting Antique model trains but can\'t decide which trains to collect? If any of the foregoing applies to you, then consider Prewar European Model Trains - specifically trains and accessories made in Germany by Marklin and/or Bing, (or early trains made in England (Hornby) or France (Jep). Many of these early trains and accessories demonstrate beautiful designs and fine workmanship - some are considered works of art !! This guide addresses the collecting and restoration of antique O and larger gauge Marklin , Bing and other European manufactured trains and accessories.(Other German manufacturers included Gebruder Bing, Karl Bub, Doll & Cie, Carette, Kraus/Fandor, Kibri, Kiem, Arnold, Cabo, Fleischmann and Issmayer - other major European Manufacturers included Hornby of England and Jep of France). This guide does NOT deal with smaller gauges such as HO and OO. This guide also does not deal with modern day reproductions. By definition, a reproduced piece is a newly manufactured or created item that attempts to be identical to an older piece produced in a specific period. By example, Marklin has recently begun reproducing a few items out of their early catalogs. In the US,early Lionel trains have been extensively reproduced by such companies as MTH and Lionel itself. I strongly believe that a well restored original is always more desirable and a better investment than a reproduction. The restored original is the \"real thing\", but may have some new paint or new parts - this is OK - fine antiques are restored all the time and collectors have accepted that and valued these restorations at higher prices than unrestored originals. The key, as always is in the quality of the restoration. Let us now explore some history: Beginning in the 1860s, Germany became a hub of manufacture of fine quality hand painted metal toys. There is general agreement that the Marklin family business which started around 1859 as a manufacturer of fine qualitydetailed tinplate toy stoves and ovens became the leader and has remained in a leadership role even to this day. The quality of their production, from the late 1800s through the 1930s is extraordinary. Their metalwork was designed to please the parents as much as (or more than) the children who (generally) played with the toys. The designs are full of bright color, whimsey, fancy, artistry and detail that was sometimes attempted by the other competitors but seldom really compared. The early model railroads and accessories were essentially hand made piece by piece, hand soldered, hand painted using multiple coats of top quality enamels, heat baked and then painted again and finally varnished. The pieces actually worked- doors opened and closed, stations, streetlamps and railway signals were lighted by oil lamps or candles and then by electric bulbs, cranes pulled their loads up and down. With Marklin (sometimes spelled Maerklin) making the highest quality model railroads,, the firm Gebruder Bing (Bing Brothers) made very good pieces and was a strong competitor to Marklin. Bing grew to be the largest manufacturer of toys and other metalware by the early 1930s, but was forced out of business before WW2. Marklin picked up manufacturing soon after the war ended, as their factories were not significantly damaged by wartime bombings. Marklin continues to this day to produce high quality large and small gauge model trains. Most of the other German manufacturers listed above ceased production by the start of WW2.
