This is a rare find. It features the comic genius of LUTE PEASE. Lute Pease was employed for 15 years as a horticultural salesman, mined for gold inthe Klondike & Yukon, managed a hotel, & from 1901-1902 he wasthe 1st resident US Commissioner in Nome, Alaska forthe Yotzebue Sound Point Hopte District. During those years he was a reporter & political cartoonist for the Portland Oregonian, a job he landed after submitting drawings of a murder & suicide he witnessed on the street. One of hisinterviews was with MARK TWAIN!

Lute Pease Bio 1869-1963

From 1897-1902 he was in Alaska, returning to the Oregonian after that. During his stay in Alaska he sent publications to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. From 1905-1912, Lute Pease wasthe editor in chief ofthe Pacific Monthly in Portland assisted by his wife, who was an artist. During that time he wrote a number of articles onthe West, on Alaska and on the Alaskan Gold rush. Circulation of the paper increased from 40,000 to 100,000 and one of his articles appeared in Colliers (Sept 1909). After author Jack London\'s novel \"Martin Eden\" had been rejected by publishers in the East, Lute Pease accepted it for publication & illustrated it for the Pacific Monthly.

About 1913, Nell\'s ill health forced the couple to Washington, DC whereshe was treated. Lute did some freelancing & in June 1914, became a political cartoonist for the Newark, New Jersey Evening News. On May 2,1949, Pease was awarded the 1948 PULITZER PRIZE for \"a distinguished example of a cartoonists work\". The recognized work was a cartoon, \"Who Me?\" that Pease had drawn forthe Evening News & it was published April 6, 1948. The cartoon depicted a scolding robed judge, labeled \"Court Order\", and had a caricatured John L Lewis. (He was the United Mine Workers Union Leader during the Coal Strike of the Spring of 1948). Lewis was standing in front of a broken store window with a pick ax behind his back. The hole in the window was labeled \"Coal Strike\", and the store itself labeled \"US Economy\".

Pease was 80 yrs old, making him the oldestperson at that time to win the Pulitzer Prize.
