The joy and merriment of Purim is truly felt in this lively scene by artist Rabbi Raphaely. Clowns playing instruments prance through the streets of Jerusalem together with costumed people dressed as characters from the Megillah such as Mordechai, King Achasveirosh and Haman.Children twirl their \"Graggers\" (noisemakers) and blow their horns. People watch the revelry from their balconies. Please see all our photos to seethe details in each section .

The artist\'s use of color adds to the atmosphere of Purim and his strong lines yet graceful figures make you want to get up anddance along!

This high quality giclee on paper is exclusively available through Art Catalog Online. It is done on a rich feel acid free matte paper and has the soft lookand feel of a watercolor.

How this came to be is an interesting story. The original watercolor was offered for sale in our Gallery and was purchased for the director of a charitable organization for children in Israel. He loved it so much he wanted to use it for the invitation to an exclusive benefit event. We approached the artist on the organization\'s behalf to ask if he would allow them to use this image. Rabbi Raphaely was more than glad to agree to this. A classy invitation and an additional insert (see photo) were created and inserted into a purple parchment envelope. It was definitely an attention grabber among the mail most people get!

We then suggested to Rabbi Raphaely that we reproduce the artwork as a fine art giclee and then offer the organization the opportunityto sell the giclee prior and during the chairty benefit edition. Once again Rabbi Raphaely graciously granted us permission to reproduce, market and sell this image. The rest of the edition remained in our gallery. Naturally we sent Rabbi Raphaely several giclees for his collection and he was extremely happy with the quality. He even offered to sign the remainder of the edition when he was next in NY. Sadly that was never to be as he passed away a few short years later.

In all the years we represented Raphaely\'s work we spoke often by phone but he only visited our Gallery once. Several members of our staffvisited him in Florida as well. He was truly a magnificently gifted artist and a person of fine character as well.

RAPHPURI Artist Biography

S. Raphaely (also known as Tzvi Raphaeli) (b. Egypt 1924, d. 2005) was an Israeli impressionist painter. A Rabbi and an artist, he successfully merged two divergent careers together into a blend of beauty and harmony.

Raphaely was born in Egypt and moved at a young age to Paris. During the dark years of the Second World War he studied art at the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts under the direction and guidance of Jean Souverbie. While a student there, he was also a member of the F.F.I., the underground resistance movement in occupied France. In 1945 he immigrated to Israel and studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. Later in his life he lived in the United States.

Rabbi Raphaely is known for his works of art in varied media including oil and watercolor, depicting street scenes in Israel, scenes from Jewish life and festivities, and occasionally floral still life subjects. His artwork shows great versatility of matter, mood and technique conveys a deep feeling and expression of love of his land and his people.

Raphaely’s artwork is expertly done, with strong lines, yet with the grace which is characteristic of all his work. His use of color is warm, but usually restrained. On occasion, however, he will create an effect with impasto or with intense colors, which make for a feeling of awe, as in his depiction of the interior of a synagogue, or for a joyous mood, as in a still life of flowers. All his paintings and ceramics, whatever the subject, are infused with delight, affection and poetry.

Austrian born Israeli Art critic Theodore F. Meisels once wrote in the Jerusalem Post: \" Should Raphaely, who behind his beard is far younger than he looks, ever attempt to harmonize his two worlds, then this genuine painting \'Chassid\' could develop into an Israeli Chagall.....\"

Rabbi Raphaely is a listed artist. His artwork has been exhibited in galleries worldwide, shown at Art Expo in the Javits Center in NY, sold by major sale houses and is in many private collections.

Raphaely also illustrated the Pesach Haggadah [Hardcover-1975, Miller Publication, 1975].

Zvi Raphaely died in 2005, leaving behind his memories of 20th Century Israel in his many beautiful paintings. tax
