Russian Orthodox Icon "The Virgin of The Sign". Wood, tempera, gesso, hand painted. Size 31 x 26 cm (12.1" x 10.2" x 0.6").
The Virgin is portrayed in the icon with hands lifted in prayer for the whole world. In the circle on her breasts is the God-Child, the Savior Emmanuel. This iconography is related to Orans, an ancient form used to depict the Virgin. In Russia the half-length depiction of Orans received the name “The Sign” after the miracle of the Novgorod icon in 1170. The representation of the virgin with an orb in her hands is an iconographical peculiarity.
Very nice piece of religious art.
The certificate is available upon request from Lithuanian Culture Department testifying the authenticity and age of the icon.
