HOW THE ARTISTS ARE RELATED. N. C. WYETH: N. C. Wyeth directed his boundless exuberance toward everything in his life: his painting and his familywere profoundly inspired by the intense energy he transmitted. Father and instructor to Henriette, Carolyn, and AndrewWyeth, he also taught Peter Hurd and John W. McCoy. PETER HURD: The young man from New Mexico first encountered the Wyeth family when he came to study with thefamous illustrator, N. C. Wyeth. Southern New Mexico is the region he has painted for 40 years, the domain he and his wifeHenriette Wyeth have made their home. HENRIETTE WYETH: The eldest of the Wyeth children demonstrated her gifts at an early age and has continued to grow asan artist though the years. Her portraits of the Wyeths provide a magificent family album and chronicle her owndevelopment as well. CAROLYN WYETH: Henriette Wyeth\'s younger sister has relentlessly avoided any publicity in order to protect the solitudeshe requires. Still working in the studio of her father, her paintings reflect the mysterious and brooding quality of thethickets and groves surrounding her childhood home. JOHN W. McCOY: In an unusual mixed-media technique, John McCoy captures the rocky, isolated terrain of the Mainecoast. Married to composer Ann Wyeth, he studied with his father-in-law and painted regularly with his brother-in-lawAndrew. ANDREW WYETH: N. C. Wyeth\'s youngest child was destined to become the most famous of the artists in the family. Underthe stern tutelage of his father, Andrew Wyeth emerged from his youth as one of the most important painters of his time.Now he laments his impact: \"I\'m having a very bad influence on American painting.\". GEORGE WEYMOUTH: Married to the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McCoy, George Weymouth is an unorthodox man whoset his painting aside when his sense of priorities demanded his total effort to conserve the land and heritage of theBrandywine River Valley. Having achieved his goals with the Tri-County Conservancy of the Brandywine, he has resumed hiscareer as an artist. JAMES WYETH: Andrew Wyeth\'s son was a celebrity by the time he became 20 years old, a status he regards with a gooddeal of concern.All editorial color separations in this issue by Colorline International.
