A very nice specimen of a pre-contact mortar and pestle set made of volcanic stone and used for grinding up bait by the Native Hawaiians.
Measurements:Size of pestle 1.5\" in height, 1\" in diameter. Mortar approximately 7\" in length and 4.2\" across, 2\" in height.
Provenance:From a Makaha, Hawaii patina and surface. Condition is as viewed. If you have any questions or would like to see further photos, please contact us and we would be happy to oblige you.

About Hawaiian bait grinders: (from \"Arts and Crafts of Hawaii,\" by Sir Peter H. Buck)
\"Ground bait, or chum, consisted of bait fish cut up into pieces or pounded until soft (palu). The small stone mortars (poho) used for pounding or mixing the bait and some other ingredients were descriptively termed \"poho ku\'i palu.\" From their light weight, it is evident that the mortar could be held in the left hand while the pestle was worked with the right hand.\"
