RARE Antique 19thC Artist Signed Rookwood Pottery Vase 10.5\" Dated 1883 OOAK :
$2999.95

RARE antique 19thC one of a kind artist signed and dated Rookwood Pottery vase. The vase is in the Standard Line series, is incised Rookwood, and dated 1883 on the bottom. It is also marked with the letter G for ginger clay. Signed by artist Vivian N. Alexander.

The vase was made as a presentation piece / birthday present for Rookwood founder Miss Maria Longworth Nichols. The artist, Vivian, was a student at the Cincinnati Pottery Guild and showed great promise as a hand decorator of pottery. To show Ms. Nichols her appreciation for her encouragement, Vivian created this one of a kind piece, inspired by her many visits to local parks in the Cincinnati area. The vase depicts two swans at play in a pond surrounding.

The vase was later sold with Ms. Nichols possessions, and made its way to Charlotte, N.C., where it remained until 2015 before coming to Asheville, NC, where it was purchased by its present owner. It was stated that Ms. Nichols left word for the vase to be returned to the Alexander family upon her demise. Vivian Alexander was never employed by Rookwood Pottery as she went into fashion design soon after gifting the vase. It is truly a rare, once-in-a-lifetime find.

There is what looks like a glaze skip on the lip of the vase, but must be part of the decoration as it matches another mark on the rim that is part of the light cream colored \"sponged\" decoration. Please see the last two photos. The vase has some light crazing, but no chips, cracks, or fleabites, and the area in question was acetone tested to rule out a possible repair. The white spots in the photos are from overhead lighting.

The vase is a nice large size measuring approximately 10.5 high x 10.5 inches in diameter. It is 5-7/8\" across the top.

Shipping cost includes professional packing and shipping by the local UPS store that handles the shipping of high end items purchased from the nationally renowned Brunk sales.
