Exquisite Chinesecarved zitan wood panel. Of rectangular form, carved in high relief, bearingarich patina. The imagery is absolutely sublime, and depicts the famous sceneby Wang Ximeng known asA Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains. Wang was one of the most renowned court painters of theNorthern Song Period. Hisonly surviving work is a 39foot long scroll depicting the imagery carved into this panel.The painting, finished by Wang when he was only 18 in 1113, was one of the largest in Chinese history, and has been described as one of the greatest works of antique Chinese art. The painting is in the permanent collection of thePalace Museum in Beijing.

The artisan who carved this piece was a master in his own right, and displayed great talent in his tribute to Wang Ximeng. The minute details are superb, from thebeautiful and precise calligraphy to the scene itself, which displays great perspective and depth with layers of mountains drawing the viewer into thelandscape. Upon closer inspection, the intricate details begin to reveal themselves. A charming country village is tucked into the valley with small cottages, and bridges spanning the rocky shoreline. Lifelike trees of many forms grow between the gently folding hills as the mist rises in the distance.The natural zitan grain and patina adding further depth and life to the imagery. Too much to list. The entire masterpiece is framed by an incorporatedcarved Zitan frame of most handsome and tasteful proportion. Of significant size, measuring approximately32.5 inches wide by 14.5 inches high. Twoornate metal brackets are attached at the upper edge for wall display.

Among tropical hardwoods, the most prized of all is zitan, an exceptionally rare species. Zitan is so rare that it is virtually unknown in the West, and until recently was thought to be practically extinct. InChina it was said that the dark purple color of zitan resembled the color reserved for the use of Qing imperial family. As a result, only the imperial household was allowed to use zitan in China from the 17th to the 19th century. Zitan trees grow very slowly, and zitan wood has always been in short supply.Pieces wider than 12 inches such as this exampleare exceptionally scarce.

A magnificent work of art for home or office, exhibiting great taste in the traditional Chinese aesthetic. Would make an exquisiteaddition for the discriminating collector of world class Asian art and antiques.
