Beautiful sterling silver spoon having gold finish allover from Victor, Cripple Creek District,Teller Co., Colorado commemorating golddiscovery and mining dating to years around 1900 featuring on the top figuralminer holding a gold nugget in one hand and leaning on a pick with the otherhand, sign below is reading MILLIONS IN IT, below twisted design down thehandle. In the gold finished bowl there is most expertly hand engraved image ofa building, the writing above is ELKTON MINE. It is 4 3/4” long (121 mm) and is in excellent condition. Here issome history: Elkton Mine, Victor, Cripple Creek District, Teller Co.,Colorado. The beginning of the Elkton mine is astory to add to the Cripple Creek legend. It is said a man by the name of JohnW. Bernard, who nothing about prospecting, spent his first night in the CrippleCreek area sleeping on the ground. When he awoke the following morning, hestaked the first likely rock pile he could find and named it for a pair of elkhorns lying nearby. The Elkton produced more than thirteen million dollars inits day. Elkton, the town, grew around the mine and in time absorbed the townsof Arequa, Eclipse, and Beacon Hill. The population at its peak numbered about3,000 persons in 1905. Much remains of Elkton today and ruins of the ArequaMill are still visible.
