The finish is 22 carat gold plate. Gilding is like new! Shiny Bright! The rotating detailed globe is working as it should...turning just as the Earth does. The light is operated by a switch at the top of the lights arm.Switching on the "sun", (the globe light suspended on the movable arm) will show daylight on the Earth below...The second hand in it's own clock face is powered by a second battery...(sr626sw)This is a reproduction of the one and only original one found in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.As a re-creation of this national treasure...this fascinating 19th-century astrological instrument displays various times in relation to the motion of the earth. The cosmochronotrope actually has affixed to it a working model of the earth which rotates on its axis every 24 hours. It also contains an illuminated sphere representing the sun which continually illuminates the appropriate part of the globe as the earth rotates. In addition to all of this, the cosmochronotrope has a standard clock built to it as well. The cosomochronotrope certainly seems to embody every mechanism used up until then to tell time!It is an astronomical clock, which is designed to shows the time of the sunrise and sunset, anywhere in the world, at any time. The clock has a quartz movement, by the German clockmaker Hermle (takes 2 AA batteries). The skeleton frame of the clock is beautiful gilt brass.

The gilt is mint with the name plate still in original protective plastic.

The original has four clocks at the back of the clock representing 4 time zones, in this reproduction these are non-functioning clock faces.Original instructions for care of the surface finish (of the gold plating) said it should be cleaned with mild soap and water. (This has not been needed...cloth gloves recommended when handling)Chrono relates to the time and trope refers to the fact that the clock performs its functions via rotation.Executed by the Franklin Mint.

Approx. 15" tall by 7" diameter.

Stored for years in a dust free in a sealed box.
