A beautiful find with the original well used patina throughout. As you can see you have a very tidy looking writing table which houses acampaign style secrataire compendium drawer, the drawer slides out, all legs havehidden carved spindle legs inside with castors so the sliding action isfaultless

The drawer once extended has a duel action writing top, this piece can be slid back inside the main body of the desk so you have fullaccess to the drawers or you can simply lift the central flap and have quickaccess to less space

The desk top is secured via a depression switch to therear, press the button and the whole top lifts, it can be seated in one of fivepositions, as you raise the top a mount for holding paperwork rises at the baseof the slope and produces out the front

The piece has been deep cleaned hand condition waxedand hand polished from top to bottom, it will have normal patina marks here andthere consistent with fair use and honest age, the piece can be fully restoredto include a complete French polish for around £400

This era defining piece ofGeorgian furniture gained popularity in the early eighteenth century owing tothe explosion of interest in classical architecture. The Palladian revivalpopularised by Colen Campbell with the release of his Vitruvius Britannicus between1715 and 1725 was supported by rich and influential benefactors such as theEarl of Burlington whose interest stretched much further than the ability tocommission property. Numerous landed gentry were only too eager to try theirhand at architectural design and many country houses in the UK carry theinfluence of their original owners.

Architectural publicationssuch as Batty Langley’s “Treasury of Designs” served as the crossover fromarchitecture to furniture design and writing tables with ratcheted tops appearin the first edition of Chippendale’s Director in 1754. Ince & Mayhew’s“Universal System of Household Furniture” provides similar designs which bearcloser resemblance to this piece where they are considered as “writing andreading tables” reflecting the enormous enthusiasm for learning and knowledgeduring the years of the enlightenment. Their inclusion in both of theseinfluential works is testament to their popularity and the growing interest inmetamorphic furniture that peaked in popularity during the Regency period.
