Absolutely fabulous French Limoges tankard: it stands almost 13.5\" tall andbears the green underglaze J.P.L. France Pouyat mark as well as an impressed blank number 559. It is not signed by the artist, but it is obviously professionally decorated. The grapes and vine hand painted decoration is beautiful in and of itself, but what really sets this tankard apart is the gilding. Using the etched gold technique, the heavy gold around the upper rim of the tankard features a very unusual and unique decoration consisting of spiders and spider webs. This type of decoration is something I have never seen before, and I believe it to be a fairly rare piece.
This tankard belonged to my girlfriend\'s mother, who recalls it being in the family since she was a little girl. Her family worked on the Boston and Maine railway in northern Maine and traveled often, picking up beautiful and unique items during their travels. (Interestingly, she believed it was a Minton piece.)
I never noticed this until I scrutinized the tankard for condition issues for this sale, but there is a hairline crack which runs from the rim straight down the tankard to the left of the handle, measuring approximately 9.5\" (see pictures 7 and 10 above). On the base of the tankard near the rim there is also a very minor stress crack from firing to the left of the impressed mark, approximately .75\" (please see picture 12 above). If you look very carefully you will find several very minor scratches or blemishes, not unusual in a piece that\'s over 100 years old.
