Here is a Top Quality and Unusually Large Georgian Traveling Inkwell in Star-cut Crystal with Sterling Silver Mounts, Lid and Catch
Made in London in 1834 by the Famous Silversmith, George Reid, Fully Hallmarked, in Excellent Condition Not Engraved

Here is a rare, unusually large, Traveling Inkwell with a fine star-cut crystal body, and sterling silver mounts, sealing lid and thumb-piece closure, made by the famous specialist London silversmith George Reid.

This fine and collectable piece was made in London in 1834 in fully hallmarked English Sterling Silver, and would have been part of a luxurious traveling case or writing set.

This large inkwell is well over three inches long, with a leather-lined sealing lid.

See the additional photographs for the fine crystal, top quality workmanship and finely modeled thumb-piece.
Overall the inkwell is in very good condition, the crystal excellent with normal bottom wear, and the silver very good, with a couple of shallow dents and dings from years of use.

The Inkwell is well over three inches long (3.25 ins / 8 cms) and almost one and a half inches wide (1.5 ins / 3/5 cms). It stands, with the thumb-piece, one and three quarter inches high (1.75 ins / 4.5 cms).

The side of the silver mounts bears the clear hallmarks shown.
The makers’ mark is “GR” for the noted London silversmith, George Reid.
The hallmarks are the lion passant guarantee mark for English sterling silver, the leopard’s head town mark for London, the letter “t” the date letter for 1834 and the duty mark the head of King William the Fourth.

Additional correct partial hallmarks are on the inside lid and the thumb-piece, including a clearer maker’s mark.

See Arthur G. Grimwade London Goldsmiths 1697 - 1837 Their Marks and Lives pages 72 number 886 for this actual maker’s mark, and page 639 for details of George Reid, of Hatton Garden, London.
