This is a true RELIC...a very, very special relic. I have been doing this a LONG time and it takes a lot to stir me over a \"find\" anymore...but, I literally wept when I saw this. It was made before the Civil War by a slave to carry their baby in out into the fields. O.K....I am weeping again.....These were often times used, but have all but disappeared from the face of the earth. This one is in gorgeous condition. The bentwood handle slides back and forth to allow a parent to lift the baby. There is a notch on one end where the infants head would have been set to keep the child from rolling over. The person who made this one, went the extra mile and added some very primitive decor on one end. I love the peg construction. This piece is amazing. It has not only history, but heart. I tell you, when you touch this piece, it has soul, and I am not exaggerating when I tell you this. I did some research and I could only find 2. One is in a museum, one was sold a year or so ago and they are both rough compared to this one and not nearly as complete or with the extra detail. This has been in one home for ages and ages and there is a family connection to the original home owner. This may be the single best example of such a piece of Americana in existence....
