- You are offerding on a rare pair of 12\" tall,antique figural Japanese Moriage vases.
- A great addition to any Japanese pottery collectionor a wonderful gift! These vases are an exceptional example of heavy, ornate Japanese Moriage raised applied slip decoration. In all our years, we have never seen such an unusual vase with dancing figures, raised ornate slip work & so much attention to detail! These are truly special & it is so very rare to find a pair!
- These stunning large vases feature \"cameo\" scenes on the front of a dancing court jester/child & on the rear are beautiful flowered tree branches.
- The figures on the front are raised in very high relief & appear to be dancing with a baton in one hand & a circular fan in the other. The figures are dressed in ornate green robes with cobalt & light blue accents, a yellow collar & cobalt pants. One foot of each figure is raised & resting upon what appears to be a porcelain garden stool. The figures have beautiful faces with a traditional hairstyle.
- The scene behind the figures is very very ornate with raised swirls, beading & other designs. There appears to be a tree, a river & some type of structure in the background.The front & rear cameos have a beautiful pointed scalloped border with heavy green beading.
- The rear cameos depict a pink & blue flowering tree branch on a natural ivory color background with heavy pale yellow beading.
- The body of the vases are very ornate & heavily decorated with green, cobalt & pale blue decorative floral & scroll slip designs along with triangular chevron border designs all on top of a pale golden yellow background.
- Each vase measures approx 12\" tall. The vases measure approx. 7 1/2\" diameter at their widest point.
- These pieces date from the Meiji period, circa 1868-1912.The vases are a pair, but were individually handcrafted, not exact copies of each other like modern pieces, therefore they are ever so slightly different.
- These items are estate pieces and in excellent condition for their age of approx. 100 years. They are 100% original, no repairs. The faces, hands & feet, as well as the batons & fans of the dancing figurines are 100% complete.We would remind buyers that these items are antique & pre-owned with associated surface wear, for example: there is a very small area of missing slip on the side of each vase (please see photos #6 & #11), there are small bubbles, blemishes & crazing consistent with Moriage pottery of this era, the interiors of the vases are partially glazed & there is a grey mark on the bottom of one vase that looks like a crack, but IS NOT, see photos below. None of this detracts greatly from what are scarce examples of their kind. This is us nitpicking, we are simply trying to be as specific as possible for our customers.
