RARE ROYAL DOULTON KINGSWARE JUGFALSTAFF TOBYMADE FOR DEWARSFrom 1908, the \"Jovial Monk is one of the surviving Royal Doulton Kingsware jugs. Excellent overall condition. Some signs of age as expected.The Jovial Monk flasks were made for Dewars Scotch whiskey. It is 7 1/2\" high, and signed by Charles Noke, the original developer of the technique used in fabricating the Kingsware line. Similar to slipware used in the Doulton Holbein wares, the method is more economical, so that it could be used for commercial products such as this highly collectible Dewars Jug. Unique to Doulton,the process reversed the usual method of manufacture, by applying color to the inside of an embossed mould. The body, usually a terra-cotta color as here, was slipped into the mould so that the design was applied when the jug was fired.This gives the unique, muted, colors of Kingsware.
