Indeed this series, known as the \"Down and Outs Menu Men\" are extremely rare and verydifficult to acquire.I have only seen, in many many years, one or two available on or on the entire Internet and sadly,due to their age, they invariably have damage so I regard the two I have on offer, in absolute mint condition, as extremely rare. Designed and modelled by the prolific James Hadley in 1874, he is appropriately and correctly back stamped with the earliest impressed Royal Worcester back stamp 1862 and also has the Victorian diamond shaped dating lozenge which,with the helpof Kovels New Dictionary of Marks,you can actually trace very easily the actual day and precise date that he was created which I would usually do for you but even with my jewellers loop I can\'t make out the information in the corners of the diamond that I need to date him to the day. I have taken photos from my own copy of Henry Sandon Royal Worcester Porcelain Book for your convenience and easy viewing and to also show the exact function they were originally created and intended for.They were used by all the high class hotels and restaurants in London to display the menus, this was worn like a tabard/sandwich board over the shoulders of these intriguing menu men with a choice of just 3 main courses at the front and 3 desert or pudding choices down the back. In the days,long long ago, pre MacDonalds and all the modern day fast food establishments, where we have so many \"dozens\" of choices for all courses that it takes an hour to read and decide, it\'s wonderful and very collectable to still be able to occasionally acquire collect and keep these items, steeped in history,mystery and intrigue from decades gone by. This item is 6\" tall and in mint condition and was purchased from a North Yorkshire Fine Arts Sale and I\'m \"guessing\" has been kept in a display cabinet and possibly belonged for all, or certainly most, of its existence to just one family.PLEASE NOTE THE WHITE AREAS ON THE FIGURINES BOOTS ARE NOT SCUFFS OR PAINT LOSS THEY WERE CREATED BY THE ARTIST ,FOR EFFECT, ON THE DAY OF MANUFACTURE DEPICTING THE SCRUFFY BOOTS OF A \"DOWN AND OUT\".
