About Hawaiian kapa beaters:
\"The implements used in beating out the bast for tapa were of two forms: One for each of the two distinct stages in beating. They were made of hard wood, Acacia being the wood used in most. The first type, termed hohoa was used in the preliminary stage of beating out individual strips of bast. the hohoa, somewhat club-shaped, ranged in length between 14-15 inches, with a round striking part. The second type of beater, termed i\'e kuku, used in the second process of eating, had a quadrangular blade with four surfaces of equal width. After the implement was shaped, the four blade surfaces were rubbed smooth to prepare them for the orthodox long parallel grooves and for the geometrical designs, of which there is a large number and which forms another feature of Hawaiian beaters. Hawaiian beaters were made by male experts who used a straight-edged length of bamboo as a ruler and a shark tooth set in a handle as a carving implement.\"
