Signed Card, 2” x 3 ¼”,“W. Dennison,” withthe notation “Post MasterGeneral, Feb. 10th 1866” in another hand beneath. Dennison was Governor of Ohio from 1860-1862and served as Postmaster General in the administrations of Abraham Lincoln andAndrew Johnson from 1864-1866.

Signatureis in Very Good condition, light and evenly toned with mounting traces onreverse.

WILLIAM DENNISON, the twenty-fourth governor of Ohio, was born inCincinnati, Ohio on November 23, 1815. His education was attained at MiamiUniversity, where he graduated in 1835. He went on to study law, and thenestablished his legal career in Columbus. Besides his legal practice, Dennisonalso had interests in the banking and railroad industries. He first enteredpolitics in 1848, serving one term in the Ohio State Senate. Dennison nextsecured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by apopular vote in the 1859 general election. During his tenure, the Civil War hadstarted, and troops and arms were raised for the war effort. After runningunsuccessfully for reelection, Dennison returned to his legal and businessinterests. Two years later, he served as chairman of the Republican NationalConvention. In his last position, he secured an appointment from PresidentLincoln to serve as postmaster general, a post he held two years. GovernorWilliam Dennison passed away on June 15, 1882, and was buried in the Green LawnCemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
