The Gentle Artscollection, for the second time in Royal Doultons history, offers a series ofCrinoline Ladies for which Royal Doulton was so famous for throughout theworld.

The firstcollection, Lady Musicians, were eagerly sought after by artistically sensitivecollectors. The Gentle Arts series followed this success with an original themethat captures the leisurely pursuits proper to proper English gentlewomen ofthe 18th century. Aristocratic ladies of the day found many fruitful ways tofill their days and their artistic expressions flourished in gentle hobbiessuch as embroidering, painting, music and writing. This collection was createdto give romantic insight into the charm of a bygone era.

The Gentle Artsseries was issued in a worldwide limited edition of just seven hundred andfifty each. The series represents six types of artistic expression enjoyed by18th century ladies. Unlike other series’, each figurine has been created invellum bone china, and comes with a coordinating accessory associated with herparticular skill.

Letter writing occupied many happy hours forthe ladies of the 18th century. Royal Doulton has selected anauthentic letter, written by the famous novelist Jane Austen, concerning herown romantic involvement with Tom Lefroy, who later became Chief Justice ofIreland.

The tiny letter, on the writing desk, isprecisely worked so that every word may be read. The quill is softly shaded toemphasize the sculptor’s skill in modeling such a delicate masterpiece.
