RUSSIAN 84 SILVER ENAMEL MALACHITE COSSACK TSAR ALEXANDER II BRAVERY SNUFF BOX:

Extremely rare magnificent Imperial Russian 84 silver snuff, Tobacco or jewelry box, decorated with hand-painted enamel miniature King\'s portrait, covered with beautiful malachite lid, and decorated with uniformed cossacks, riding horses and Russian Imperil eagles. The enamel portraits is made of hot glass enamel, and represent the Russian Emperor Alexander II THE LIBERATOR in military uniform.

On the lid of the box there are miniature hand-painted king\'s enamel oval portrait, with a sizes of about 40 x 30 mm. The space around the portrait is decorated with gilded decorations - 2 riders and 2 Russian Imperil eagles.

Around the malachite cover has a gilded inscription. The inscriptions are : \"ЗА ХРАБРОСТ И УСЕРДИЕ\" (FOR BRAVERY AND DILIGENCE) and \"ЛЕЙБ ГВАРДИИ КАЗАЧИЙ ЕГО ВЕЛИЧЕСТВА ПОЛК\" (LIFE GUARDS COSSACKS OF HIS MAJESTY REGIMENT).

The side walls of the box are decorated with Russian imperial ROYALTY AND MILITARY MOTIFS / THEMES... The box opens on very fine hinges and locks with a spring mechanism, and the locking button is decorated with a red stone. Remarkably well done and the hand-painted enamel portrait has a terrific sense of reality.

The box is 10.8 cm. long (4.1/4\" inches), 7.3 cm. wide (2.7/8\" inches), 4.3 cm. high (1.5/8\" inches) and weights 251.4 grams solid silver.

This item is part of huge private collection, which belonged to a Soviet academician and subsequently purchased by another scientist who had been a cultural attaché for over 20 years in the former USSR.Very little Russian Imperial items survived the various political upheavals of the twentieth century, as much of it was confiscated and destroyed by the communistic power.
