The Mother of God Icon \"Seekerof the Lost (or Perishing)” received this title from an incident which tookplace in antiquity. A repentant monk of an Asia MinorChurch in Adana, Venerable Theophilus, was saved frometernal damnation by the Holy Icon. This incident gave the Icon it\'s name. Itwas glorified in the 6th Century during the reign of the Byzantine EmperorJustinian.

In Russia this holy Icon revealed itsblessings in the 18th Century. In Moscow, apious parishioner of the Nativity of Christ Church, in theSwordartisan District, had a dream in which he was directed to give this shrineto his parish church. The Nativity of Christ Churchwas pillaged by the French in 1812, but the holy Icon was returned. Severalincidents of miraculous patronage and help in sickness and adversity wererecorded as a result of intercession by the Mother of God.

Today the icon is located in the Church of the \"Feast of the Consecrationof the Church of the Resurrection\" on Nezhdanov Street in Moscow. The feast is on 5 (18) February.

Before the icon of Our Lady\"Seeker of the Lost\" people pray for the blessing of the marriage, forthe release of vices; mothers come with the petitions for the dying childrenand for the health and welfare of children; the healing of eye diseases andblindness, toothache, the fever, the disease of alcoholism, headaches; about those had fallen away from Orthodox faith and for their return to the Church.

Thismodern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Yaroslavl (not far from Moscow) that is one of themain and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Thismodern icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board with theshrine i.e. the rectangular hollow at the middle part designed for the image. The margins are above the hollow. The shrines mostly belong to the antiqueicons from the 18 century and earlier. The board was hand made. It has wellvisible traces of hand craft at the back.

Theboard was covered with levkas (gesso, special priming) and painted with eggtempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. The style istraditional and strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting.

There were two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping. Both are lackingnow.
