This icon depicts the ArchangelGabriel and the Virgin Mary as the Angel of God appeared to the Virgin Mary toannounce the birth of Christ. (Luke 1:26-37). This subject is much rarer in theRussian Orthodoxy than in the Western art. The feast is on 25 March (7 April).

Thismodern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Yaroslavl (not far from Moscow) that is one of themain and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Theicon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, special priming)with egg tempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. Thestyle is traditional and strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting.

There are two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping.

Size= 11.6x10.4x1.1 (29.6x26.5x2.8 cm). Weight = 1325 gr.
