Saint George the Winner Bearer isone of the most beloved saints in the world. He lived in the III century andwas put to tortures and death for his faith. Popular legend tells that SaintGeorge had killed the Dragon that had been terrorizing a town in Libya.He freed the Princess that had been offered to the Dragon as a sacrifice. SaintGeorge is the Patron of Aragon, Georgia, England, Russia and many other countries andterritories. The feast is on 23 April (6 May).

Thismodern Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artistat the Russian town Yaroslavl (not far from Moscow) that is one of themain and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

Theicon was painted on an old wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, specialpriming) with egg tempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leafgold. The style is traditional and strictly follows antique canons of the iconpainting.

There are two originalwooden wedges at the back to prevent the board from warping.

Size = 12.2x10.4x0.8(31x26.5x2 cm). Weight = 981 gr.
