VERY RARE original 1770 land document “THE RETURN OF THE COMMISSION ON TOKEN OF LOVE,” for the property of Lawrence O’Neal, site south of present-day ROCKVILLE, MD near Cabin John, signed by the four commission members: Simon Nicholls, William Haymond, Ninian Riley, and Samuel West. One page, 11 3/4” X 7”. IN NEAR FINE CONDITION!

The 1st section of the document reads “Frederick County, the 11th of May, 1770 Whereas by virtue of a Commission granted by the Justices of the County aforesaid to Lawrence O’Neal, in order to perpetuate and hold in memory the bounds of a tract of land earned an known by the name of this, Token of Love, situated in the County aforesaid on the head of a run called, and known on by the name of Capt. John and in consequence thereof we the subscribers being authorised by the aforesaid Commission to examine any witnesses relative to the boundary of the land aforesaid or any where on the same, may defend. We therefore intend to meet on the aforesaid land and premises on Saturday the 11th day of June next by twelve of the clock in order to discharge the trust reposed in us relative to the matter aforesaid—(commission) Simon Nicholls, Samuel West, Ninian Riley, William Haymond.”

The 2nd section reads, “We the Subscribers do here by certify that on the 16th day of June, 1770, we met at a bounded white oak standing between two springs of a run commonly called and known by the name of Captain John Run where John Jones aged sixty-six years or there about being sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God, put his hand on a bounded white oak standing as aforesaid and said that that was the bounded tree of Holmesdoland? as he had been informed by Caleb Litton and that his lease for part of that tract of land begun at that tree and that he heard several people say it was called the Token of Love and farther sayith not. (signed) Simon Nicholls, William Haymond, Ninian Riley, Samuel West.”
