Rare 1930\'s UITA (United Indian Traders Association) Navajo concho belt / necklace by Bert Staples.

Made in an early Navajo style, this hand-made belt has thirteen, 1 3/16 x 15/16-inch domed conchos and fourteen, 5/8 x 3/8-inch flat ovals, all hand-stamped with traditional patterns. The size and configuration of the components create a free and easy drape, allowing the belt to be worn as a necklace, and the buckle has a hook that closes to one of the ovals. In excellent vintage condition, it tests positive for sterling silver, measures 30 1/2-inches long and weighs 61.7 grams.

The UITA was formed in 1931 for the purpose of authenticating, promoting and protecting the interests of Native American arts and crafts. The organization was formed around a core of Navajo and Hopi Indian traders and merchants who ran trading posts in area towns. Many of the work from this era used traditional techniques and design styles from Navajo jewelry of the 1880-1910 period and are referred to as “Revival-style” pieces. Bert Staples was voted the organization\'s first president and was designated the number 3 as a means to identify his work. He owned the \"Crafts del Navajo\" trading post and a hotel and museum known as \"Casa del Navajo.\"
