JAZZ HANDS BACKWARDS.
These are so great! I have never seen them before, not in the reference books, catalogues or on-line collections.
Fully-figural bookends depicting a nude in anexuberantdance pose. I think the design is copied either from Max Le Verrier or Joseph Lorenzl, though I have not found an image of this exact figure to corroborate that guess. I lean toward Lorenzl as my ladies have a similarhairdo as seen on a few Lorenzl pieces that also are slim, nude dancers.
Bronze-clad, a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster form through the process of electro-plating. You can see the wire loops in the indentationsin the bottoms, those loops used to suspend the pieces in a vat of some electro-plating solution. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900\'s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class.
No maker\'s mark (there would have been foil labels on the bottoms), but I think Armor Bronze, which operated in NYC in the \'20s and early \'30s (then relocating to Taunton, MA). I believe Armor Bronze for the reason that the brown color of the base andthe dark gold color of the lady match the colors of another set I have by Armor Bronze. That other set, by the way, is by Le Verrier - Delassement - and I have it listed on as well.
Condition is excellent with just one small issue: one figure (on the right in my photos) has been bent forward the slightest bit on her base. You can see wrinkling in the cladding at the front of her foot (see my 2nd to last picture), the result ofpressure having been applied, probably accidentally, from the back. Please know that the wrinkle is NOT A BREAK NOR A REPAIR. And the fact of one lady\'s being at a slightly different angle is almost imperceptible. Otherwise, no damage to the figures or the bases. Finish is original, does show age-related wear as to be expected but otherwise is fully intact and lovely. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
9 3/4 inches tall; bases are 2 3/4 X 2 3/4 inches. Weighing 1 3/4 pounds EACH PIECE.
Perfect gift for the jazzaficionado or lover of modern dance in your family.
