Antique 19th c. English Basalt Teapot rare American Eagle \'The War Of 1812\' :
$795.00
A rare 19th century English Basalt stoneware teapot. On each side of the pot there is an eagle holding a olive branch in it\'s beak. The eagle and olive decoration, along with the classical form, indicates a piece produced for the American market at the end of \'THE WAR OF 1812\'. This Classical form places the piece in the 1815 - 1820 production period. There is no makers mark but the pot does have an unusual cursive impressed number \'26\' on the bottom of the pot. In \"British Teapots & Tea Drinking \" by Robin Emmerson page 212-13 numbers 331 & 332, there are examples of two other Basalt teapots with cursive number marks from this period. Neither of these two teapots have been attributed. This is the only example of a Basalt eagle teapot of this period that I have be able to locate. The use of a olive branches, along with the traditional American winged eagle indicates a peace theme for the pot. The War of 1812 was a very unpopular war in America. This may help explain the rarity of this piece. The pot measures 10 3/4\" long by 5 1/2\" wide by 6\" tall......
