The set are all fully hallmarked, bearing Chinese export - Sincere & Co. \'S\' stamp, plus the Chinese chop mark(先施/Sincere)

These are heavy gauge silver cutlery, each piece feels sturdy and solid, the handles are not loaded so combined weight of 493g is all of the silver weight.

Stamped 85 for 85% silver purity - the silver has been tested and guaranteed to be grade .850 and above.

There are no personal inscriptions or crests.

A high quality, circa 100 year old genuine Chinese Export solid silver cutlery set.

The Sincere Company\'s history is an amazing duplicate of that of the Wing On Company. Founded in 1900 by Ma Ying Pew (1860-1944), the Ma family were Australian Chinese who formed their store business from the profits of their Sydney fruit company. Following the success of their first store in Hong Kong, they opened their department store in Shanghai. Like Wing On, they are still in business today, but no longer involved in the silver trade. Antique Silver Buying Tips & Avoiding Fakes and Forgeries:

  • Hidden repairs of splits or cracks - Look for any swelling, variation in silver colour, and tiny bubbles/pitting. These are always signs of a repair.

  • Cast Fakes - Poor craftsmanship, blurry hallmarks, lack of definition of pattern, lack of warm patina may be an indication of reproduction by modern casting.

  • Cast sets of a single item - Carefully check the spacing, alignment and orientation of the hallmarks of the set by placing the marks side by side, compare also any scratch marks, if they are exactly the same size, position and depth, they are reproduction cast from the same piece.

  • Alterations, Change of Use - e.g. Period and pattern should match; Mote spoons converted from teaspoons; Insertion of old marks on a modern piece; A complete set of an impossible-to-assemble rare patterns, are all pitfalls to watch out for.
