The axe is 23.50” in length with a long, 40cm (15.75”), razor sharp, polished axe head. This spectacular example has an abundance of elegant sheet metal work on the handle and it is all there.What makes this rarer and important is that this is either a chieftain’s piece or one that belonged to a great warrior. The reason for this attribution is that the brass/bronze bands are formed and cut in the form of warrior tattoos. Thus this is a prestige weapon, perhaps even ceremonial, while at the same time being a viable killing/fighting piece. This ax is in fine condition. The handle has a small amount of movement but is firmly attached to the metal collar and there is a minor amount of age spotting on the axe head blade.
