Good display condition, the painting is in as found condition, its quite dark, and the varnish is crackled and bloomed as per the clear pictures. The Wooden frame is not original to the piece, however its is antique and of the period, we had it in stock and fits the piece well, so the old paper gallery label doesn\'t relate to the painting. As we haven\'t cleaned of the restored the piece, we cant see a signature, however on the edge of the canvas the partial name of \'Rudnay\' can be seen - which suggests it may be by the Hungarian artist Gyula Rudnay (1878-1957) - the piece is similar in style to Rudnay\'s other portraits. The subject is unknown, clearly as Hassidic Rabbi, his fur hat indicative of Eastern European Jewry, and another indication of its Hungarian Origin. The canvas has been attached to a later stretcher by the previous owner. The new owner may wish to have it cleaned and restored given the cracking and varnish blooming, which may reveal a signature. There is also a circular gallery stamp on the back of the canvas, however this is illegible, and doesn\'t provide any further information.One of the outstanding painters of the Alföld-school of painting. He has was teaching over 30 years at the Academy of Fine Arts. His stile can be characterized by the continuation of traditions. On his realistic paintings are often characters and activities of the countryside, but also historical scenes. His paintings are expressive through the dramatic contrast of light and dark. His motives can often be found in the Alföld- region, cities, villages, nature and people. Some works deal with literary topics. His works have their rootes in the Romanticism of the 19th century, but are combined with modern elements.
Rudnay had a great influence on Hungarian painting, his works are included in the collections of the Cá Pesaro Venice; Palazzo Bianco, Genoa; Palazzo delle Belle Arti, Rome; and the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
