Here on offer is a superb and rare large antique RoyalDoulton Slater’s Patent ewer or jug by Florrie Jones dating to between 1902 and 1914.

John Slater was the Art Director at Doulton &Co., Burslem from 1887 until his death in 1914. He studied at theStoke-on-Trent School of Design and began working at Minton, moving on toPinder, Bourne & Co, then to Doulton after they acquired the company. Aswell as being a skilled artist who signed his works, he was involved in thedevelopment of many of the special glazes used by Doulton, including rougeflambe, and a number of patents relating to transfer printing from photographicplates onto ceramics. Some works are marked ‘Doulton & Slater’s Patent’, aprocess that involved the use of lace fabrics impressed into the surface of theclay. These items are rare and highly sought after, especially where the artist can also be identified.

The outer surface around the belly of the jug has animpressed floral lace patern, the design has a beautiful floral pattern inwhite turquoise, gold and copper. The jug has a richly marbled brown collar andbase accented with gilt and beaded bands, the shoulders have been further embellished with gilt foliate designs. The interior of the jug has a rich blue marbled glaze. The body of the jug has been madefrom stoneware.

The jug is, unusually, in near mint condition asthese wares are prone to damage.

The base has the impressed mark for Royal Doultonstoneware that was used from 1902, the second impressed mark is that forDoulton & Slater’s Patent, a mark that was only used on selected specialwares between 1886 and 1914. That means that this piece was made between 1902and 1914. It has a numerical code for the design hand painted on the base. The basehas the embossed mark for the artist Florrie Jones.

This jug is being offered in excellent antiquecondition. It measuresabout 36.7cm tall and 13cm at the widest point, itweighs 1363g.

A wonderful collectable piece.
