Up for sale is a very rare antique late Victorian Gorham sterling silver postal scale. It features a lovely little carrier pigeon, with a sealed envelope tucked securely in its beak, at the center of a very ornate floral scroll with scale marks in various increments. The hinged and weighted pendulum has a built in clip/hook for attaching envelopes or hanging very small parcels. The counter balance is designed to pivot clockwise and point to the correct weight in ounces as it swings. Piece has a ring along the top from which to suspend the scale or attach to a chatelaine. It measures 6 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide and weighs 66.1 grams. It is marked on the reverse, as seen in the photographs, ‘Gorham 10 1895’ and monogrammed ‘ARL.\' Piece is in excellent working condition with minor wear and imperfections. The pendulum is slightly warped but does not affect the accuracy of the scale and it can easily be straightened.
Piece was lightly cleaned before being photographed. You may wish to have it professionally cleaned or polished.
