This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the earliest English mechanical 2 pillar corkscrews, particularly in such fine undamaged condition. It is not marked by the maker but is a type produced around 1790 - 1810. The corkscrew was inserted into the cork and the whole thing turned by gripping the wing nuts and the oval cage top. Once cork penetration was complete the wing nuts alone were turned to draw out the cork back through the cage. The overwhelming success of the various Thomason designs around the same period meant that these corkscrews were not produced for very long, hence their rarity. It measures 17 cm in length overall when the worm is fully extended.
