Comments: Richard Teschner (1879 Karlsbad -1948 Vienna). Austrian painter,printmaker, illustrator, sculptor, important puppet designer and scene designerfor his own famous puppet theatre. Studied at the Academy in Prague from 1896to 1899. RichardTeschner was born in Karlsbad, at that time in the Austrian – HungarianMonarchy. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at Prague from 1896–1899. In 1900 attended the School ofArts and Crafts in Vienna.
From 1901 he lived in Prague for several years andworked as a book illustrator. From 1903 on his interests in marionettes wasawakened. In 1909 he moved to Vienna and started to work at the WienerWerkstätte. In 1911 he married Emma Bacher the widow of his friend and galleryowner Paul Bacher. It was during their honeymoon that he became aware of Javanesemarionettes. These so – called “Wajang figures” are not moved by strings butare stuck on thin rods of wood or bone.
In 1912in his studio in Vienna, and using the same technique, created the piece ‘Kosumo’sself-sacrifice’ according to a Javanese legend. His audience included his bestfriends, Gustav Klimt, Alfred Roller, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and others.Teschner wrote his own text and the music for the piece. In the following yearshe created a complicated technique of stage management and lighting which set newinternational standards. His first public performance public took place in 1919at the Museum of Arts and Industrial Design in Vienna. His puppets were of highlyexpressive, measured 30 to 40 cms tall and were complicated to handle.Teschner’s assistants were Dr. Helene Schreiner, (1920 +) followed by HermyOttawa and later Lucia Jirgal from 1942.
