Rare L.A. SCHARFF Old MAPLE Hollow WHISKEY Saloon MINI JUG St. LOUIS, MO 1904-06

Up for saleis a scarce to rare Missouri pre-pro mini jug from St. Louis, Missouri.

Now, I\'ve seen the L.A. Scharff Delmonico Rye jug before but never this one.

It\'s marked in a dark cobalt almost black color under glazewith a fancy border &
reads \"Pure Old Maple Hollow WHISKEY -- L. & A. SCHARFF DISTILLERS -- ST. LOUIS, MO.\".

The pre-pro website dates this distiller and particular addressto the 1904 to 1906 timeline and they were located at 201-203 S 4th in St. Louis during that time period.

ADOLPH & LAZARUS SCHARFF were the actual names of the proprietors.

Here is a link to this Company from the fabulous pre-pro website:

So, it appears to be a somewhat limited short lived production of only around 2 years, basically 1904-1906.

Here is some other additional general info on this pair of brothers found off another Internet site:

Adolph and his brother Lazarus Scharff were partners in a wholesale liquor business. Both brothers were born in Essingen, Daun, Rheinlandpfalz, Germany. Adolph was born on June 1, 1846 and Lazarus on Jan 25, 1843. Adolph arrived to America sometime around 1862. He was living in Cairo, Illinois in 1864 then he moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi. This is where he would become a clerk in a dry goods house of the Scharff Brothers. His brother Lazarus opened a wholesale liquor business in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1870. He would continue this business until 1876 when he would relocate the business to St. Louis, Mo.

Listed in the St Louis City Directory as L & A Liquors ( Lazarus & Adolph ) Located at 15 South 2ND. Street.

Aninteresting fact about this Company is that they were themakers of the famous ROYAL PEPSIN BITTERS also from St. Louis.

Jug measures about 3-1/8 inches in height, graceful upward tapered shape, 1-3/8 inches at base, about 1-3/4 inches across the wider shoulder area.

Its in absolutely SUPERB overall condition, no cracks, chips, dings, or other damage/distractions to mention - its in perfect as made condition, some typical crudity from manufacturing techniques of the day - not unusual for this type of item, overall a very good strong stencil strike, no discoloration to jug, virtually no crazing, just a great little saloon mini jug and a piece of old St. Louis, Missouri pre-pro history !!!

Its a light speckled oatmeal or cream colored glaze for overall body color, dark blue/black stencil lettering and fancy border pattern.

Bottom line, its just a great looking mini stoneware jug with tons of sex appeal, you won\'t find a nicer example of this scarce pre-pro mini.
