Rare Hand Crafted Mortlock Islands (Alsocalled the Nomoi Islands) (Chuuk, formerly Truk of the Federated States ofMicronesia) Tapuana Mask Crafted from Breadfruit Wood

6 1/4 inches (16 cm)high x 2 inches (5.2 cm) wide x 3/4 inch (2 cm) deep.

Circa: 2nd half of the 20th Century

Condition: VeryGood: Light Wear

Description: Although large Tapuana maskswere made to be worn in dance ceremonies to protect the breadfruit crop, thestaple crop of the Nomoi Islands, (Mortlock Islands). Smaller masks wereaffixed to the rafter ends of the sacred house for protective purposes. Thisnewer mask was part of a collection brought back from the islands. There was noinformation available to discern whether or not this mask was made forethnographic use or for sale to travelers as a souvenir.

The item was from aKensington, California collection.
