$499.00

Interesting 1955 modernist gouache still life of a vase of flowers by noted Israeli artist Miriam \"Had Gadya\" Nissenstein (1895-1982). Born in Russia, Miriam Had Gadya (real name is Nissenstein but her pseudonym is Had Gadya) emigrated to Israeli in 1912 to become the first woman student at the Bezalel Academy at the age of 17. Although a talented artist and an important figure in the history of the Bezalel Academy, Had Gadya\'s career was not consistent and was interrupted by three marriages, wars, and the challenges of being an Israeli woman artist during the first half of the last century. She lived in Egypt during the first World War, married, returned to Tel Aviv, and then left her family to live and work in Vienna in 1921. She moved to New York in 1929 where she became a member of the art community in Harlem and made her living as a portrait painter. She returned Israel in the 1930s where she continued to work and then married an American and moved to Cairo in the 1940s. She fled Cairo for New York in 1944, leaving behind hundreds of paintings that are now lost. She left the U.S. in the 1950s and returned to Israel where she remained for the remainder of her life, living and working in Safed.
This rare work by Hadgadya is signed lower right and dated \'55. It measures 24\" x 18\" (painting size) and is in good condition. In an older frame. Please see my other sales for more fine paintings and prints.
