This is a very old very rare style Catlinite pipe from an Illinois collection I bought. This piece dates between 1890\'s and 1920\'s, it has a beautiful heavy patina. This piece has two repairs, one on the blade that is obvious and one on the stem that is not very noticeable. There are some other marks that may be old repairs, but I don\'t know for sure why. They are filled and don\'t quite match. These are indicative of very old primitive type repairs. There is also some erosion, scratches and other fleabites here and there which are to be expected for the age. This pipe also appears to be unused.
This pipe style and carving are correct for the time period making this piece a beautiful piece of Native American history!!!
This pipe measures 10 7/8 inches long and 7 7/8 inches from the top of the bowl to the edge of the blade.
The Native Americans did not smoke pipes for the sake of smoking as people do today. They believed smoking to be very spiritual and combined it with prayer and communion with the Great Spirit. These pipes were always treated with great care and respect.
